How to connect Hermes Agent to Slack from Telegram

This Tinyhat flow is current as of July 2026. The underlying invitation, channel, user, mention, and thread controls are described in the official Hermes Slack guide. Tinyhat lets you coordinate the setup from Telegram while keeping Slack credentials out of chat.

1. Start in Telegram. Tell your agent that you want to connect it to Slack. If your agent is not yet running there, begin with Tinyhat’s Hermes Agent setup guide.
2. Choose its Slack identity. Before the Slack app is created, provide the app name and the bot handle people will type after @.
3. Create and install the Slack app. Your agent sends the current Slack app manifest, Slack’s create-app guidance, and one browser-encrypted form. Create and install the app in your chosen workspace, then enter the bot token, Socket Mode app token, and allowed users’ Slack member IDs in that secure form. Never paste Slack credentials into Telegram.
4. Invite the bot to every desired channel. Inside each Slack channel, use Slack’s Add apps option or enter /invite @AgentName. Invitation is required even for public channels.
5. Configure every channel in one batch. Back in Telegram, list all desired channels, mention rules, and any optional per-channel behavior in one request. The agent resolves the live Slack channel IDs and updates the approved-channel list together.
6. Restart once. Wait for confirmation that the whole batch is saved, then send /restart in Telegram. Do not restart after each channel.

Test each approved channel from an authorized Slack account by explicitly mentioning the bot.

Slack access has three separate gates

All three gates apply. An authorized user cannot instruct the agent in an unapproved channel, and membership in an approved channel does not automatically authorize someone.

A Slack mention can bring in same-thread context

When @AgentName is mentioned in an existing Slack thread, Hermes Agent can use available earlier messages from that same thread as context. This does not promise unlimited thread history or access to unrelated messages elsewhere in the channel.

Earlier thread messages provide context, not authority. With the safe mention-only setting, each new instruction must still mention the agent unless the owner deliberately changes that behavior.

Social behavior is opt-in and bounded

Reactions and bounded helpful comments are separate options. You can enable either one, both, or neither for each approved channel.

Read-only social behavior means the agent may acknowledge or briefly comment in Slack, but it may not treat an unauthorized person’s message as an instruction. It must not use private tools, files, settings, or external actions on that person’s behalf.

One example: two channels, two users, one restart

The owner begins in Telegram:

The agent sends the current Slack app manifest, Slack’s create-app guidance, and a browser-encrypted form. The owner creates and installs the app, then enters the bot token, Socket Mode app token, and Slack member IDs for @Owner and @Teammate in the secure form. None of those credentials or IDs are pasted into Telegram.

After inviting @AgentName inside #general and #project-alpha, the owner sends one batch request in Telegram:

Configure Slack in one batch:

- Approved channels: #general and #project-alpha
- Authorized users: @Owner and @Teammate, whose member IDs
  were already provided in the secure form
- Require @AgentName on every instruction in both channels,
  including thread replies
- When mentioned in a thread, use only the available earlier
  messages from that same thread as context
- In #general, allow reactions but no helpful comments
- In #project-alpha, allow no reactions and at most one short,
  read-only helpful comment per day
- Passive social behavior must never accept an unauthorized
  message as an instruction or use private tools, files,
  settings, or external actions

Resolve the live channel IDs, update the approved-channel list
once, and tell me when the batch is complete.

Once the agent confirms that the batch is saved, the owner sends /restart once in Telegram.

Do I need to find Slack channel IDs myself?

No. Invite the bot first, then give your Tinyhat agent the exact channel names in one Telegram request. It resolves the current Slack channel IDs before updating the approved-channel list.

What should I check if the agent does not answer?

Return to Telegram and ask the agent to verify the Slack connection, bot invitation, and channel approval. Confirm that the sender’s Slack member ID is authorized and the message includes @AgentName. Finally, check that the completed batch was followed by one /restart, then test again.

Keep Telegram as the control room

Use Telegram to request access changes, adjust behavior, and troubleshoot problems. Keep credentials out of chat and use the secure browser form your agent provides for sensitive setup. Remember the sequence: choose the identity, create and install the app, invite it everywhere needed, configure all channels together, then restart once.
